Who Is Terry A. McCarthy?

I’m Terry A. McCarthy, owner and principal agent of Insurance Associates Agency Inc., a family-run independent agency at 8114 Paul Manors Dr., Suite 200, West Chester, Ohio. Born and raised in Ludington, Michigan, I grew up watching my father dedicate over 50 years to the auto mechanic and gas station business. Working for him was a formative experience—he was an equal mentor alongside my mother in raising me, teaching core values like hard work, integrity, reliability, and putting people first. There were moments of frustration too, as family businesses often bring, but those real-world lessons built resilience and a deep appreciation for the challenges business owners face every day.

My path into insurance was sparked by three influential people: my father, whose dedication to his trade showed me the rewards of commitment; a neighbor who was a life insurance agent and genuinely cared for people; and my uncle, who owned a large insurance agency in Muskegon, MI. Their examples—blending service, trust, and family legacy—motivated me to own my own agency and help others protect what matters.

I’ve been licensed in Ohio and Michigan since 1978, committing nearly five decades to dependable coverage. Early on, I spent seven years as a district manager for a major insurer, hiring, training, and mentoring new agents—an experience that sharpened my ability to deliver straightforward, effective guidance.

My athletic and officiating foundation was built during a decade of dedicated service in Michigan. As a three-sport letter winner in high school, I earned the Seaway Conference Shot Put Championship my senior year while playing starting roles in football, basketball, and track. That same year, I began officiating Amateur Softball Association (ASA) men’s league games, a commitment I maintained throughout my five years at Central Michigan University.

Parallel to my college studies and ASA duties, I served as a baseball umpire and basketball referee for the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). My time on the Student Council at West Shore Community College (1st year) further refined the leadership, teamwork, and discipline that now shape my approach to client relationships and complex business challenges.

Key Highlights

  • Championship Athlete: Seaway Conference Shot Put Champion and three-sport starter (Football, Basketball, Track).
  • Six-Year Official: Officiated ASA men’s softball from high school senior year through five years of college.
  • MHSAA Veteran: Multi-sport official (Baseball and Basketball) for the premier Michigan High School Sports Organization and high schools across Michigan.
  • Leadership: Student Council member at West Shore Community College, bridging the gap between athletic discipline and professional leadership.

Professional Credentials & Education

My background gives clients a real edge:

  • Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU®) and Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) designations from The American College of Financial Services—the industry’s top-tier credentials.
  • Completion of LIMRA’s Agency Management Training Course (AMTC) — a respected, skills-based program focused on agency leadership, recruitment, selection, training, performance management, and building productive teams.
  • Authorized Ohio instructor for pre-licensing and continuing education courses for insurance professionals.
  • Bachelor’s (BAA) degree from Central Michigan University, majoring in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts with a minor in Journalism worked to create a unique emphasis on Broadcast Journalism—which honed my ability to explain complex insurance and financial concepts in clear, engaging, and understandable language.

How my CLU®, ChFC®, and AMTC training directly benefit you — These advanced designations and courses are held or completed by only a small percentage of insurance professionals (far fewer than basic licenses), requiring rigorous study and practical application. I draw on this specialized training every day to conduct more thorough assessments of your insurance situation—spotting hidden risks, identifying coverage gaps, optimizing life insurance strategies, estate planning elements, and overall financial protection in ways most agents can’t. The CLU® provides deep expertise in life insurance applications, risk management, and business/estate strategies, while the ChFC® adds broad knowledge in retirement, tax considerations, investments, and holistic planning. The AMTC equips me with proven agency management skills to run an efficient, client-centered operation that delivers consistent, high-quality service. Together, they enable me to offer more comprehensive, tailored recommendations that enhance your security and peace of mind—all through commission-based insurance solutions, not fee-based planning.

Specialized Expertise: Artisan Contractors & More

I focus on real-world risks that demand precision, welcoming quality clients across the board:

  • Quality auto and home personal lines clients — Tailored auto and homeowners coverage with expert advice, savings, and personalized attention for discerning individuals and families.
  • Artisan contractor tradesmen — Customized policies for tools, jobsite liability, workers’ comp, and business interruption that fit your operations without overkill.
  • Auto-related businesses — Garage keepers, repair shops, automatic car washes, used car dealers (drawing from my family’s deep roots in the auto service world).
  • Dental and medical professionals — Protecting practices for general liability, buildings and equipment, and if needed, Professional liability to safeguards practices.
  • High-value properties — Apartments, condos, lessors risk property, and main-street businesses with robust commercial packages (CPP/BOP).
  • Contractor Bonds — License, Permit, Registration, Performance & Payment Bonds

As an independent agency with three licensed agents, I compare and interact with many carriers to secure the strongest coverage and value—no ties to one company.

Personal Side: What Drives Me

Insurance is built on trust and commitment. Happily married for nearly as long as I have been working in the insurance industry, I bring that same loyalty and dedication to long-term client relationships. When I’m not working:

  • Woodworking in my workshop — Crafting lasting pieces from raw materials, much like designing enduring insurance plans.
  • Licensed private pilot — Prioritizing precision and safety in every flight, just as I do with risk evaluations.
  • Licensed Apprentice Optician in Ohio — Even as a seasoned insurance expert, my curiosity persists—I am a licensed Apprentice Optician, a pursuit that mirrors my professional goal: helping people see their options with total clarity. I have this distinction in common with my wife who has been in her professional thirty years.
  • Pursuing video and photography—a long-held hobby rooted in my education and love of travel.
  • Route 66 traveler — Discovering Iconic American history reminds me of the importance of solid, reliable foundations, and the endurance of the American spirit.
  • My Family

Why Insurance

I admired my Dad for the hard work and dedication he put into running his auto repair business and gas station. I thought I was made for more and I found the trust my Dad earned serving his clients was something I wanted. Insurance was a career choice where I could be my own boss and earn the trust and respect of people for caring about what matters most to them. The best part of my decision was that I didn’t have to get my hands quite as dirty like my Dad.
